“A city of a thousand cities” - Ricardo Lozano

As co-director of two of Mexico's most important design festivals, Ricardo knows Mexico City intimately. He shares his favorite places to walk, the galleries that inspire him, and the culinary gems that make the capital a fascinating, chaotic, and profoundly human monster.

Co-director of Abierto Mexicano de Diseño, Ricardo, together with Joanna Ruiz Galindo, is also director of What Design Can Do México GNP. His work forges links with those who make this festival possible and ensure that the experience is as inspiring as it is chaotic. So who better than him to tell us about his favorite places in the Mexican capital.

Why do you like living in Mexico City?

It’s a fascinating city where absolutely everything happens. I was born here, studied here, and have lived here my whole life. I see it as a thousand-headed monster. It’s diverse, intense, contradictory, and deeply human.

Where is your favorite place to walk?

Walking from the Digital Culture Center to the second section is like crossing a small universe with moments of introspection, of wonder...

Your favorite outdoor space?

Chapultepec, always. It’s the place I return to again and again.

Which galleries do you like to visit regularly?

Lago Algo, OMR, Labor, Kurimanzutto, Lodos, Ago Projects, RRD (Reproduction and Distribution Network), among many others.

Where would you take your friends who come to visit to go shopping?

To walk through the streets of Juárez and find incredible Mexican designs such as Carla Fernández, 1/8 Takamura, Utilitario Mexicano, Mutuo, Boyfriend’s shirt, Gramo, and many others.

Where would you take them to eat?

A chilaquiles torta with milanesa at Alfonso Reyes, or a campechano taco from Jarocho in Roma. And to enjoy the night... Cananea for some rough drinks and Tijuana food.

What are your three must-see attractions in the city?

The Iztapalapa Cablebus, Ciudad Universitaria, and the Museum of Anthropology.
