Since he was a teenager, this 44-year-old Mexican realized there was no other way to combine his interest in biology, music, and drawing than through art. “It was a kind of intuition that led me down this path,” says Erick Meyenberg, who recently represented Mexico at the 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia with his project Nos marchábamos, regresábamos siempre (We Left, We Always Came Back). Below, he shares his favorite places in Mexico City.

Why do you like living in Mexico City?

Because there are many layers of history that continue to resonate.

What is your favorite place to walk?

From Paseo de la Reforma to Chapultepec. It’s a route I really enjoy. I can go all the way to the Tamayo Museum, enter, and walk through it.

Your favorite outdoor space?

The Botanical Garden, right in front of the Tamayo Museum. It has a section with giant cacti that I love visiting.

Which gallery do you visit regularly?

Nordenhake, in the Roma neighborhood. It’s a Swedish gallery. It’s an incredible architectural space designed by Frida Escobedo. The type of work they exhibit is very much in line with what I do.

If your best friend were visiting from abroad, where would you take him to eat?

To the Pigeon restaurant in Plaza Río de Janeiro, also in Roma. I love sitting on the terrace. They have pastas, salads, and everything is comfort food.

And for , drinks?

To Hanky Panky, and I would invite them for a Negroni.

What are your must-see places in the city?

Casa Barragán, but also the Abelardo Rodríguez Market in the Historic Center, where there is a mural by sculptor Isamu Noguchi, in high relief, sculpted into the wall.
