Created in 1977 in the city of Monterrey as part of the social commitment of Fomento Económico Mexicano S.A.B. de C.V. (FEMSA) to promote culture, education, and dialogue—while also connecting people with art—the FEMSA Collection is one of the most important collections of modern and contemporary Latin American art in the world. It currently includes around 1,320 works, encompassing painting, sculpture, photography, and video by renowned artists such as Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Remedios Varo, and Leonora Carrington.

To celebrate its 50th anniversary, its curators have organized the major exhibition “Constellations and Drifts: Art from Latin America from the FEMSA Collection.” Featuring 170 pieces by more than 115 Latin American artists from the 20th and 21st centuries, as well as a commissioned work by Argentine visual artist Ad Minoliti, the show will be presented at the outstanding MARCO Museum, located in downtown Monterrey, from March 19 to August 9.

Supervised by Paulina Bravo, Beto Díaz, Eugenia Braniff, and Adriana Melchor, the exhibition proposes an approach to the selected works through a constellation model, where objects move away from single, linear narratives to activate meaningful connections between the artworks, time periods, and geographies—revealing the vast diversity of approaches, languages, and perspectives that shape the artistic production of Latin America.

According to the curators, “Constellations and Drifts” is organized around five thematic axes (Territories, Colonial Structures, Identities, Alchemy, Abstraction, and Geometricism), inviting viewers to think about Latin American art beyond national or chronological boundaries. Each section functions as a window through which visitors can reimagine ways of exploring, inhabiting, and narrating Latin America.

Among the remarkable works from the FEMSA Collection that you shouldn’t miss in this commemorative exhibition at MARCO Monterrey are:

- Portrait of Lola Álvarez with Juan Soriano as a Child (1944) by renowned visual artist Juan Soriano.

- The Cornfield (Dry Milpa) by legendary landscape painter Gerardo Murillo, better known as “Dr. Atl”.

- Sucking Birds (1975) and Acrobat (The Dancer) by Oaxacan artist Francisco Toledo.

- Río Juchitán by the iconic muralist Diego Rivera.

The exhibition will also feature surprises from contemporary figures such as visual artist Gabriel Orozco, visual artist Betsabeé Romero, and photographers Flor Garduño and Graciela Iturbide.
