With less than a month to go before the International Cervantino Festival (FIC), Mexico’s most important cultural and artistic event, gets underway, here are four reasons to convince your friends or family to head to the city of Guanajuato and enjoy this spectacular event, taking place from October 3 to 18. For more than 50 years, the stages of the Cervantino Festival have welcomed internationally renowned stars such as Ray Charles, B. B. King, Ella Fitzgerald, Café Tacvba and the Bolshoi Ballet, among many others. In 2026, visitors won’t want to miss performances by Mike Patton, the legendary lead vocalist of Faith No More, who will open the festival on October 3 at the Alhóndiga de Granaditas esplanade; the Salzburg Chamber Orchestra alongside violinist María Dueñas; Ensemble Modern; tenor Arturo Chacón accompanied by Mariachi Gama 1000; the acclaimed Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernández; and, as part of the French delegation, this edition’s guest of honor, the Pygmalion ensemble, dance company (LA) HORDE and Dabeull Live Band, to name just a few.
4. A destination with plenty of additional experiences.
If you’re visiting on a weekend, the city of Guanajuato also offers incredible attractions in the surrounding area, including the opportunity to visit the Valenciana Mine, where large quantities of gold and silver were extracted during the colonial era; the popular Cristo del Cubilete monument in the municipality of Silao; or, less than an hour away by car, the Magical Town of Dolores Hidalgo, where the renowned priest Miguel Hidalgo delivered the famous “Grito de Dolores,” marking the beginning of Mexico’s War of Independence.
