Tequila is much more than a drink; it is a symbol of identity, history and national pride for Mexico. Originally from the state of Jalisco, tequila has transcended borders and has become one of the most recognized and appreciated spirits worldwide, to the point of competing with other icons such as Scotch whisky or Caribbean rum. Its essence represents centuries of tradition, craftsmanship and a deep bond with the land and Mexican culture.

Its history dates back to pre-Hispanic times, when indigenous peoples fermented the sap of the agave to produce a ritual drink known as “pulque”. With the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century and the introduction of distillation techniques, tequila as we know it today was born. Since then, its production has been perfected, while remaining true to its roots. Authentic tequila can only be produced in certain regions of Mexico, mainly in Jalisco, and must be derived from the blue agave (Agave tequilana Weber).

A RIGOROUS, ARTISANAL PROCESS

It begins with the jima, where the pineapple is cut from the agave; then, these pineapples are cooked in ovens to release the sugars. Afterwards, they are crushed, the extracted juice is fermented and f inally distilled. The result can be tequila blanco, reposado, añejo or extra añejo, depending on its maturation time in barrels. Tequila is not only fundamental in Mexico’s cultural and festive life, but has also conquered the palates of the world. The United States, Europe and Asia are among the main consumers, and Mexican brands have achieved global renown. Tequila’s appellation of origin, protected since 1974, guarantees its authenticity and quality.

One of the major tourist attractions linked to this tradition is the Tequila Express, a train ride from Guadalajara to the Magical Town of Tequila. Along the way, passengers enjoy agave landscapes -declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO-, mariachi music, tastings and visits to emblematic distilleries, where the production process is experienced up close.

The Tequila Express is not only a physical journey, but also a cultural and sensory one. It is an experience that celebrates tequila’s living heritage, its economic impact and its international prestige. In short, tequila is not just a beverage: it is Mexico bottled.
